Organic Synthetic Ideology

Keith Negus, behind “Producing Pop”  identifies 2 ways of thinking about artists in the industry he states that ideologies shape an artist's image and career. And how they are marketed towards their audience

The two ways he identifies are Organic and Synthetic.

Organic

Characteristics of Organic acts include
  • Naturalistic (meaning writes own material most of the time)
  • Nurtured
  • Enhanced by record company
  • Artist is given time to evolve through their career
  • Emphasis towards albums rather than singles
  • Aimed at older sophisticated audiences
  • Main long strategy goal is to make profits

Organic Acts Include:

Linkin Park

  • Write their own songs
  • Play own instruments live
  • Given time
  • Album emphasis

30 Seconds To Mars
  • Write their own songs
  • Play own instruments live
  • Given time
  • Album emphasis

Arctic Monkeys
  • Write their own songs
  • Play own instruments live
  • Given time
  • Album emphasis

Synthetic

Characteristics of synthetic acts include
  • Combinatorial approach (writers, sticking people together)
  • Constructed acts both executive and by the record label
  • Artist given a short time to prove their success
  • Emphasis on singles not album
  • Younger, less sophisticated audiences
  • Immediate profits on a short term strategy

An Example of a Synthetic Act:

RIHANNA
