Music Video Purpose & Function

“Music video can be seen as an attempt on behalf of the music industry to find a more efficient and cost effective method of promoting pop music”

(PG.28 Dancing In The Distraction Factory” – Andrew Goodwin)

Andrew Goodwin
Wrote the book Dancing In The Distraction Factory in 1992. Had ideas such as thought beats which was the idea of "Seeing the sound of the song" which is similar with the idea of synaesthesia.

He also talked about star image and that the narrative and performances in music videos, and the relationships between visuals and lyrics. And the videos Illustrate and amplify the bands star image qualities.

Music videos have a variety of different functions to them, firstly music videos can be made to help promote the release of the artists/bands latest single or a upcoming album that’s about to be released.

Another function that a music video does is that promotes the artist or band by emphasising the star image of the act. The music video also entertains the audience by watching it or it can reinforce, adapts or undermines the meanings of the specific song the video is for.
