Textual Analysis - Nickelback - Photograph

Analyzing the music video for Nickelback's Photograph straight away we see that the video takes on a narrative structure in the video, but as the video continues and when the chorus begins the video also takes on a performance format with Nickelback performing with instruments which helps promote the band as being organic.

The Mise-En-Scene also helps promote the image of Nickelback in many ways, First of all the use of photographs both fits with the subject and title of the song "photograph" and it also helps promote Nickelbacks Originality and Creativity due to using the idea of photographs for memories in the music video. The Use of instruments in the music video throughout the chorus help promote the band being organic as they are performing themselves with instuments such as drums and the guitar which are typical conventions of the rock gene. Finally as Nickelback are an organic band the use of the band wearing casual clothing shows off there organic nature as they aren't being controlled by a label in what they wear or even what they do.

In terms of visual hooks, throughout the video there is always one common theme which is Nickelback in performance scenes in a school gym, throughout the video there are multiple camera shots and different scenes in which Nickelback are performing the song, this is also very common during the chorus.

Throughout this music video for Photograph there are also a lot of both lyrical and visual matches throughout, One of the fist lyrical matches in the music video is right at the start with the lyrics "Look at this photograph" and on screen is the lead singer of nickelback holding a photograph at the screen for us to see. Another Lyrical match comes in when the lyrics "steering wheel" is heard to the viewers and a small scene is shown of a couple driving in a car on a open empty road. Finally the last lyrical match in this video can be seen when "Kim's the first girl i kissed" is sung a long scene in the video showing 3 people, and two of which are a couple in a abandoned train station like setting of them kissing as the other guy watches on.

CD Cover Analysis: Hail The Villain - Population Declining

HAIL THE VILLAIN - POPULATION DECLINING

Population Declining is the début album of Canadian Rock Band Hail The Villain which was released in 2008 with Warner Music and re-released on Roadrunner Records on June 8, 2010.

The CD cover shows the setting of a alleyway at night-time with a car running down a person. The CD cover also shows on the front of the car in big bold yellow text showing the band name and album title.

The Front cover uses a large amount of dark colours which can be associated with the bands name 'villain' which we would associate with darker colours of clothing in films or music video's. The front cover also shows a person being run over by a car, this can be on reference to the album title "Population Declining" as it depicts it showing death.

The album cover and title can also be linked on certain songs on the album cover. Songs like "Runaway" can be linked to the car on the album cover making a run to get away from something that might of happened. Also it can be linked to the song "Blackout" as someone being run over or killed can be referenced to have blackout either being knocked out or permanently due to death which may be happening in the album

CD Cover Analysis: Kasabian - Velociraptor!

KASABIAN - VELOCIRAPTOR!

Velociraptor! is the fourth album by british rock band Kasabian and was their 3rd UK number 1 album that they have released. it was released 16th september 2011.

The Front cover of the CD is mainly Black And white with some red writing as well. the front cover main image is a white Velociraptor, the image is made up of a white background and all four of Kasabian's band members edited to be covered in feathers to symbolise the Velociraptor and creating what could be a Traditional FeatherVelociraptor.

Looking at the fonts used Kasabian use the same type of font for their band title throughout all of their previously released albums through their debut album "Kasabian" through to there newest album "48:13"

When Looking at the back of the CD cover once again it uses the same style of font that has been used through all of their released albums.

It also features a picture of the band which is taken out of the music video for 'Switchblade Smiles' which is a single off the album, and the image shows the band appearing to play upside down, possibly playing on the Velociraptor theme.

The back of the contains information including, Track Listings, Record Label, And Copyright Information.

CD Cover Analysis: Set Your Goals - This Will Be The Death Of Us

Set Your Goals : This Will Be The Death Of Us
THIS WILL BE THE DEATH OF US is the second studio album by American punk rock band SET YOUR GOALS and was released 21st July 2009 by The Epitaph Records Label.

On the front cover of the CD contains a number of skulls which could be in reference to death which is mentioned in the albums title. Also on the front cover the Album title and Band Name are written in red and a blood drip effect which again suggests death. The background of the CD cover has a 'heaven' feel and again represents that idea that after death you go somewhere such as heaven and hell and this CD cover shows both signs with the skulls and blood representing hell and the background representing going to heaven.

The back of the CD cover contains normal things that appear on most CD covers such as the CD track listings, a bar code and details such as which record label the band. On the back of the CD cover there are images once again of skulls which again play on the title of ''This will be the death of us'' and the death part. also there is a scythe which the skeleton is holding, which is commonly associated with the grim reaper and being the symbol that signifies death. Overall the CD cover uses a good amount of images that represent and symbolise certain things within the Album Title. On this CD cover a lot of the imagery shows and suggest DEATH which plays from the album title ''This will be the death of us''.

Textual Analysis: Yellowcard - The Deepest Well

The Music Video for Yellowcard's The Deepest Well is a performance format video which incorporates a live concert performance which is edited in tune with the recorded record. The performance record shows that the band are organic in terms of playing their own instruments in a band. With other Yellowcard video most of them do again incorporate a performance in the video's even other videos that also include a narrative which shows off their creativity star image in that they can use 2 different formats in one video. Other music videos that Yellowcard have done that have performance in them include the songs: Always Summer, Sing For Me and Way Away to name a few.

"WAY AWAY" VIDEO

"Always Summer" Video

To achieve and promote their star image, there are a number of different techniques in which are used in the music video to do this. Firstly the use of different textual elements of Mise - En - Scene and the editing all help achieve star image. With Mise - en - scene in the music video the band members are all shown wearing casual clothing which helps show that the band represent of what is typical of an organic band, one of the characteristics of an organic band is that they are given the freedom to wear what they wish and are not usually put into costumes like a synthetic act.

The Editing also helps promote yellowcard's star image of being creative. this is due to throughout parts of the video, editing effects were used and this help make the video have a nostalgic feel to the video, it also added the effect that it was a 'homemade' video created by a fan as it was a live performance set music video. the use of the different effect within the video help show off the creativity of yellowcard as a band when producing there music videos.

Looking at the content of the music video for the deepest well by yellowcard, there are many times throughout the video with familiar recurring images, one of the recurring images includes many shots of the crowd, as the video is filmed at a live concert of Yellowcards, and it shows the crowd jumping to the song and shows off one of yellowcards star image qualities in that they are talented as the crowd are enjoying the performance, other recurring shots show the band members, both individually and as a whole in a variety of different shots from the crowd, side of stage and behind the band.

In terms of visual matches at points in the video when the lyrics 'The Steps I Climbed' a shot of the featured artist on the song showing a hand gesture of walking up some 'steps'. other visual matches include fast paced cuts that happen in time with the music changing notes or beat. and at the start of the video there is a black and white effect and as soon as the song starts the screen explodes into colour.
